Winter is the perfect opportunity to spend some time with your houseplants.  With the weather particularly chilly in our climate, most of us find ourselves spending far more time indoors than out, and rightfully so!  All this time indoors can be a great opportunity to give your houseplants some much deserved and much needed TLC.

HERE ARE 3 SIMPLE HOUSEPLANT CARE TIPS TO DO THIS WINTER…

1) CLEAN YOUR HOUSEPLANTS…

It’s bathtime!  First, dust off the leaves of your houseplants and then gently wipe down each leaf with a damp cloth.  Take this opportunity to spot check your plants for signs of pests.  If you happen to notice signs of pest activity be sure to isolate your plant and treat it immediately!

2) RE-POT YOUR OVERGROWN HOUSEPLANTS…

Gotta love an upgrade!  When choosing a new vessel to repot your plant, select one that is one or two inches larger in diameter.  Ideally, choose one with drainage holes and a tray, but if your new pot doesn’t have holes or a tray, be sure to add some stone at the bottom to assist with drainage. Once you’re ready to re-pot, remove the plant from its old vessel, remove some or most of the old potting mix (depending on its condition), and pop it into its new/clean pot with some fresh potting mix. Be sure to give your plant a nice drink, ensuring that the soil is fully moistened.

3) PRUNE & ROTATE YOUR HOUSEPLANTS…

Time for a haircut! Cut off any leggy growth, trim up any vines that may have gotten out of control and snip off any that no longer produce leaves. Cut back any indoor trees or shrubs and remove dead or dying leaves to make room for new growth.  If you notice that any of your plants are leaning one way or another, or that one side of your plant is looking healthier, rotate it to even it out!

Winter is the perfect time to give your indoor plants some extra attention.  This way they will only require basic care in the spring/summer and you can focus the majority of your time and energy on your outdoor plants!
